Frequently Asked Questions

Medex Billing
How can I schedule a CPR class, base tour
or other event?
Why does Livingston County EMS come into
Lima sometimes?
Lima Ambulance is a Basic Life Support (BLS)
agency. Some emergencies will require
Advanced Life Support (ALS) services, which
LCEMS provides along side Lima EMS crews.
In addition, as a volunteer EMS agency, we may
not always have a crew so LCEMS will cover in
those situations.
I have an Emergency, now what?
Step 1 - Call 911
If possible stay near the patient and
stay calm.
Be prepared to answer questions to
help the dispatcher get you the help
you need. Such as when the
symptoms started and if they have
any medical history.
They may instruct you to provide
medical care and/or assess the
patient to help give responding
ambulances more information.
Step 2
If possible, start to prepare for going to
the hospital.
- Find a medication list or after visit
summary from the doctors office.
- Turn on an outside light, unlock the
door and clear a path to the patient.
- Gather shoes, a cell phone and
charger, a jacket and comfort items.
- If you are calling for a child, pack a
diaper bag and get the carseat ready.

Funding
•
• Lima EMS is a volunteer ambulance run by the Village of Lima. We provide emergency response to both the Town and
Village as well as mutual aid to the surrounding towns/villages as needed.
• As a BLS (basic life support) agency, Lima EMS relies on partnership with neighboring ALS (advanced life support)
paramedics to help our sickest patients. When a paramedic provides medical care along side Lima EMS, their agency will
send a bill to cover the cost of their services.
• If you require emergency medical care and transport to the hospital by Lima EMS, the crew will ask for your
demographics and insurance information. In some cases, they can get this from the hospital if you are unable to provide
it. Following the call, the crew will complete medical documentation that includes your contact details and insurance
information.
• At times, the insurance company will send a check addressed to the patient (minus the co-pay). The expectation is that
the patient will deposit that check and write a new check for the total cost of transport plus co-pay to the Village.
• Lima EMS and the Village of Lima have decided not to submit insurance claims for non-transport calls, like lift assists
and check-overs, because we believe in supporting our community. Our goal is to ensure everyone feels comfortable
reaching out for help without worrying of costs. We wish we could waive the cost for all EMS response; however, fuel,
medical supplies, vehicle maintenance and staff training are constantly increasing.
• Advances in vehicles and the onboard medical technology have grown from around $5,000 at our inception to over
$250,000 today. Lima has successfully managed to keep the burden on taxpayer low by staffing 100% by volunteers and
submitting bills to patient’s insurance companies.
• We contract with Medex Billing to help us navigate the complex and everchanging insurance rules and regulations. If
you are transported by Lima EMS, you will receive billing correspondence from Medex on our behalf. If you have
questions about your ambulance bill or insurance coverage, please contact https://www.medexbilling.com/
• Lima EMS accepts donations to be used to support volunteer activities, provide uniforms and to purchase specialized
equipment or projects. Donations in the form of checks are deposited once a month and Venmo funds are immediately
available. Checks can be sent to Lima Ambulance PO box 335 Lima NY 14485 or Venmo @LimaVolunteerAmbulance
